Legendary Indian captain MS Dhoni recently met his former teammate Suresh Raina. The duo had shared the dressing room for more than a decade before announcing retirement from international cricket on the same day– August 15, 2020. They have also achieved tremendous success together for Chennai Super Kings, winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) title four times in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021. Raina bid adieu to the franchise competition after the 2022 season while Dhoni lifted his fifth trophy as the CSK skipper last year.
With the deadline for the IPL 2025 retention inching closer, fans have been eager to see if MS Dhoni will continue to play or draw curtains on his illustrious career. Amid the buzz, Suresh Raina took the internet by storm, dropping a picture with the World Cup-winning captain.
MS Dhoni sported a casual, black t-shirt which he paired up with blue denims. Suresh Raina, on the other hand, was captured in an all-black ensemble, He donned a full-sleeve t-shirt and a pair of trousers. The southpaw shared the photo on Instagram with the caption– “Always a pleasure catching up with you, Mahi bhai.”
Soon after the post surfaced on the internet, cricket enthusiasts, especially the Chennai Super Kings fans, flooded the comment section with red heart emojis. One of them highlighted the “unbreakable bond” between Dhoni and Raina while labelled them as “the best duo in Indian cricket.”
One social media user became nostalgic after seeing his “idols together” after a long time. “They both make CSK complete,” admitted another. “We miss Thala (Dhoni) and Chinna Thala (Raina) playing together,” wrote a person.
Despite his retirement, Raina is still considered a core member of the CSK family. He earned the nickname “Mr IPL” with his unparalleled consistency in the T20 tournament. Raina featured in 205 IPL matches and aggregated a total of 5,528 runs including one century and 39 half centuries. He was also part of the MS Dhoni-led Indian teams that won the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy.
Meanwhile, MS Dhoni has yet to reveal the final decision on his IPL future. Many believe that the Chennai-based franchise will retain Dhoni after the uncapped payer rule was modified. Besides leading CSK to five triumphs, Dhoni has scored 5,243 runs in 264 IPL appearances.
