Reese Witherspoon recently shared the Christmas traditions she cherishes with her three children.
Reese Witherspoon’s Christmas plans sound as warm and delightful as one would expect. In a recent interview, the actress, who recently launched her third book in the children’s series Busy Betty & the Perfect Christmas Present, shared some of the cherished holiday traditions she follows with her kids as well as the fun memories from her own childhood Christmas celebrations. She even revealed a holiday tradition she once attempted which turned into an “epic disaster” (something we can all definitely relate to).
In an interview with People, the Legally Blonde actress revealed that the inspiration for her holiday-themed book came from a conversation with her son.
“My little boy was even saying to me last night, ‘I don’t know what to get everybody’,” Witherspoon said who is a mother to three children – Ava, 25, Deacon, 21 and Tennessee, 12.
“I said, ‘Understand anything you make me, I will love more than anything you buy.’ Hopefully the book kind of reinforces that homemade gifts are the best,” she added.
During the interview, the Wild lead fondly remembered her own childhood Christmases when she enjoyed crafting presents for her loved ones which she stills does.
“I would make watercolors, or cards with markers, or Rice Krispies treats or chocolate chip cookies,” she said.
Just like any child, Witherspoon too had her favourite toy growing up.
“I was obsessed with Teddy Ruxpin,” she recalls. It was a large, stuffed bear with a built-in tape player. She revealed that her father bought her the last one and she used to play it “every single day.”
“It was basically a big glorified tape player, so I put all my music in it. I just loved it,” she added.
Witherspoon still loves creating holiday memories with her children, including activities like ice skating, decorating and making gingerbread houses.
“We like to decorate the porch with poinsettias and ribbons and garlands, and take family photos at Thanksgiving so that hopefully we get it together to have a Christmas card,” she said.
However, as her older children have grown up, it has become more challenging to get them involved in family traditions.
“It’s a bit sad, but my 12-year-old still gets dressed up, and it’s cute,” she said.
When it comes to making gingerbread houses, Reese admits they now rely on a kit rather than creating everything from scratch, all because of a past experience. “Back when I was a ‘Do anything that Martha Stewart says’ woman, I tried to make my own house and it was an epic disaster. My engineering was not up to par. It just collapsed,” she said.
Witherspoon also mentioned some of the most meaningful gifts she has ever received from her children and one of her favourites was a jar full of personal memories and compliments from when her kids were younger.
“It’s everything from, ‘I love when you hug me after school’ to ‘I love when we sing this song in the car.’ To this day it makes me want to cry,” she said.
Another gift she received from her children was a set of five handwritten letters and each letter was meant to be opened at different times throughout the year.
“It was such a lovely, lovely gift. We’re a very sentimental family,” Witherspoon added.
