Bollywood star Dia Mirza talks about the possibility of a sequel to the 2001 blockbuster, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, with R Madhavan.
Dia Mirza confesses that the makers have considered making a sequel, but states that the story has to be strong enough.
When you think of Dia Mirza, her iconic role as Reena Malhotra in Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (RHTDM) likely comes to mind. Starring alongside R Madhavan, Mirza became an overnight sensation with her debut in this 2001 classic. Directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, RHTDM is remembered for its unforgettable music, engaging story and charismatic cast, making Mirza and Madhavan one of Bollywood’s most beloved on-screen pairs. In August 2024, the film made a comeback in theatres, delighting fans and nostalgia-driven cine-goers who relished watching it on the big screen once more.
Reflecting on the re-release’s impact, Mirza shares, “Maddy and I were just blown away by the videos we saw of people in the theatre. So, my husband (Vaibhav Rekhi) said, ‘we have to go to the theatre and watch the film’. We actually went, and I have personally experienced people singing the songs. I was just sitting there and thinking that RHTDM is a gift that never stops giving. I don’t know what it is. Is it the music, the lyrics? Nostalgia is a very powerful feeling. And I hope that if a sequel is ever made, the story does justice to the kind of love the film has earned over the years.”
The overwhelming nationwide response also led to a touching conversation with Madhavan. “Maddy called me and asked, ‘Are you seeing this?’ I was like yeah, it’s insane. Then we did a Live session, and that also went kind of viral,” Mirza reveals.
So, could the renewed love for RHTDM spark talks of a sequel? Mirza responds thoughtfully, “Over the years we have been discussing. But we have also been very clear that we will not even attempt a sequel unless the story is strong.”
