A US warship sailed through a sensitive waterway that separates Taiwan from China on August 22, the US Navy said. The US and its allies have increased crossings to reinforce the Taiwan Strait’s status as an international waterway, angering Beijing.The voyage was made by the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Ralph Johnson.The US Navy’s Seventh Fleet said the move showed Washington’s “commitment to upholding freedom of navigation for all nations as a principle.” “No member of the international community should be intimidated or coerced into giving up their rights and freedoms,” the US Navy added.The US Navy also termed the USS Ralph Johnson transit a “routine” in accordance with international law. Taiwan’s defence ministry confirmed that the warship sailed south to north, and that “no anomaly was detected in our surroundings.”
