With the win over Spain, the Indian hockey unit claimed its 13th Olympic medal in the sport. Eight gold, one silver and four bronze including the one picked up at the latest installment of the quadrennial sporting extravaganza.
The Indian men’s hockey team picked up the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 as they got the better of Spain in the third-place game on Thursday at the Stade Yves-du-Manoir in France.
With the win, the Indian hockey unit claimed its 13th Olympic medal in the sport. Eight gold, one silver and four bronze including the one picked up at the latest installment of the quadrennial sporting extravaganza.
Group Stage:
IND vs NZ: India Beat New Zealand 3-2
The Indian hockey team, led by Harmanpreet Singh got their campaign in Paris off to a brilliant start as they notched up a 3-2 win over the Kiwis as Mandeep Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad and Harmanpreet Singh netted for India.
IND vs ARG: India Played Out 1-1 Draw Against Argentina
Harmanpreet’s strike nullified Lucas Martinez’s opener for the South American unit as the Indian men rallied back to pick up a hard-fought draw.
IND vs IRE: India Beat Ireland 2-0
Harmanpreet netted for the third game in a row with his brace against Ireland to claim a crucial win and regain the winning momentum.
IND vs BEL: India Lost to Belgium 1-2
Abhishek gave the men in blue the lead in the game, but the Belgians hit back through strikes from Thibeau Stockbroekx and John-John Dohmen to turn the game on its head and hand India their first defeat of the group stage at the 2024 Olympics.
IND vs AUS: India Beat Australia 3-2
Skipper Harmanpreet’s double and Abhishek’s goal gave India a historic win over the Aussies as the men in blue picked up a win over the side from down under for the first time in over half a decade.
Quarterfinal:
IND vs GBR: India Beat Great Britain 4-2 on Penalties, After Match Was Tied at 1-1
India were given a shot in the arm as they managed to pip out the British side in the quarterfinal to move into the semifinals of the event. India were hamstrung as they were down to 10 men against the Brits but managed to take the game to penalties, in which star keeper PR Sreejesh helped the men in blue come out on top.
Semifinal:
IND vs GER: India Lost to Germany 2-3
India played their heart out as Harmanpreet found the back of the net again, and Sukhjeet Singh added the other, but the German unit demonstrated their resilience to come out on top and reach the semifinal, condemning India to a bronze medal match.
Bronze Medal Match:
IND vs ESP: India beat Spain 2-1
Harmanpreet capped off a brilliant campaign with a brace in the third-place play-off as he helmed the Indian fightback after trailing the Spaniards. However, the India skipper led from the front to rally his side past the side from Europe to claim the nation’s 13th Olympic medal in field hockey.
