    “Afghan Killings Matter of National Shame” Australia Strips Commanders Of Medals Over War


    Australia is stripping medals from senior military officers for alleged war crimes and unlawful conduct during their service in Afghanistan between 2005 and 2016. Defence Minister Richard Marles stated this move addresses “the wrongs of the past” following the Brereton Report, which uncovered the unlawful killing of 39 civilians and prisoners by Australian special forces. Despite no charges being pressed yet, Marles emphasized ongoing reforms and accountability. The governor-general will oversee the process of returning the medals, with veteran support groups urging the suspension of medal removals until all investigations are complete.
