The episode documented in Harry’s autobiographical memoir Spare gained popularity days after a Palace aide revealed how the pair got into big fights.
Days after a Kensington Palace aide revealed how fights between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle escalated, UK media outlets reported that Harry himself recounted a heated argument he had with wife Meghan Markle in his memoir Spare.
As reported by the Mirror, Harry in Spare recounted an incident where he snapped at wife Meghan Markle during an argument.
In his memoir the British prince wrote that he could not understand why his former actor wife was ‘having a go at’ him and after that he snapped in the course of the argument.
“Maybe the wine went to my head. Maybe the weeks of battling the press had worn me down. For some reason, when the conversation took an unexpected turn, I became touchy. Then angry. Disproportionately, sloppily angry,” Harry wrote, without detailing why the argument began.
“It was partly a cultural difference, partly a language barrier, but I was also just over-sensitive that night. I thought: Why’s she having a go at me? I snapped at her, spoke to her harshly—cruelly,” he further added.
A few days earlier Kensington Palace aide Tom Quinn, who wrote the book Gilded Youth: An Intimate History of Growing Up in the Royal Family said a Palace insider told him that even Kate Middleton and Prince William have rows but when Harry and Meghan have an argument, they “get into it in a big way”.
“Someone who worked for Kensington Palace told me they [William and Kate] do have rows. It’s not a perfect marriage. They have terrific rows. William and Kate throw cushions at each other. It’s always kept under control,” he said.
“It doesn’t escalate. The fight doesn’t get bigger and bigger, (but) hen Harry and Meghan fight, they both really get into it in a big way,” Quinn said, citing the insider.
Prince Harry, however, recalled that the argument saved him because he understood later based on Meghan Markle’s reaction that she would not put up with such displays of anger.
“[She asked] ‘Where did you ever hear a man speak like that to a woman? Did you overhear adults speak that way when you were growing up?” Harry wrote, adding that she disappeared for fifteen minutes before returning to the room and asking these questions. “She wasn’t going to tolerate that kind of partner. Or co-parent. That kind of life,” he wrote.
He further added that Meghan also discussed the possibility of Harry going to therapy. “We both knew my anger hadn’t been caused by anything to do with our conversation. It came from somewhere deep inside, somewhere that needed to be excavated.”
“My wife saved me. My partner is an exceptional human being, and I’m eternally grateful for the wisdom and the space that she has been able to give me,” Harry wrote, highlighting how Meghan Markle helped him navigate some of the toughest phases of his life.
