Benedict Cumberbatch confirmed his return as Doctor Strange in June this year, even before Marvel Studios announced their plans for the revamped Avengers 5 and Downey’s comeback.
It seems like the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday will turn out to witness the most epic reunions with several Marvel OGs gearing up to come together for one more time. After Robert Downey Jr’s confirmed comeback in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Benedict Cumberbatch, best known for his portrayal as Doctor Strange, is also returning in Avengers 5. While the actor previously confirmed that he would reprise Doctor Strange in Doomsday, he has once again reiterated his thoughts on joining forces with Downey.
Speaking at the Tokyo Comic Convention, Benedict Cumberbatch, without diverging many details, said that he is looking forward to some remarkable Marvel reunions in the film and is also excited to work with the Russo brothers and Robert Downey Jr. “I am really excited to not only work with the Russo brothers again but also to have Robert Downey Jr returning as Doctor Doom. I think there will be some cooler developments ahead in the film and I am excited to see what happens next,” he’s told TV Groove at the event.
Elsewhere at the Red Sea International Festival, Benedict Cumberbatch also spoke to Variety and dropped hints about his character. Calling Doctor Strange “a complex man who is motivated by the need to control everything at any cost,” he added, “I am interested in seeing where these costs take him. There is a lot more to play and it is very exciting.” He also revealed that the makers are ready to do the shoots across several locations. “They do a lot of real set builds and there’s a lot of 360 stuff to work with, despite a lot of moments where you go,” he added.

Chris Evans In Avengers: Doomsday
Benedict Cumberbatch’s latest comments about having his appearance in Doomsday came just a few days after Chris Evans was reported of joining the film alongside Downey. However, it is yet to be seen if the actor will reprise his iconic character as Captain America or will take on a different role altogether.
Thanks to the endless possibility of Marvel’s Multiverse Saga, more characters are expected to return in the future.
A fifth film in the Marvel Studios’ celebrated Avengers franchise, Doomsday will hit theatres in May 2026 followed by the sixth installment, Avengers: Secret Wars.
