Mumbai Indians spent Rs 75 crore to retain five players and will enter the auction with a purse of Rs 45 crore.
Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians have bid farewell to their class of 2024 with the likes of Ishan Kishan, Tim David, Piyush Chawla, Mohammad Nabi, Dewald Brevis among others not finding their names in the list of retained players. MI on Thursday revealed the five players they have kept hold of ahead of the mega auctions including Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma.
Bumrah was retained for Rs 18 crore and he thus becomes the most expensive player in MI’s history, surpassing the Rs 17.5 crore they splurged on landing Australia allrounder Cameron Green at the mini auction in December 2022.
While Bumrah was MI’s first retention, Surya and Pandya took the second spot with Rs 16.35 crore each. Former captain Rohit was the fourth retention with Rs 16.30 crore and Tilak completed the list having handed a deal worth Rs 8 crore.
MI will enter the mega auction with one RTM option for an uncapped player.
IPL 2024 was a forgetful affair for MI as they finished last in the 10-team competition. They managed to win just four out of their 14 matches to end with eight points. Earlier, MI reappointed Sri Lanka batting legend Mahela Jayawardene as their head coach who replaces South African Mark Boucher into the role.
MI have also confirmed that Pandya will continue to lead them next season. The franchise spent Rs 75 crore from their auction purse of Rs 120 crore to retain five players. They will enter the mega auction with Rs 45 crore.
“I have played so much cricket for Mumbai Indians. Mumbai is the place where I have started my cricket career. So, this city is very, very special. I am happy to be here. We haven’t had the best of the season in the last two or three years. But we are quite determined to change that. We will be looking forward to each other’s help. And hopefully, we can turn things around,” Rohit said in a video shared by MI.
