Yashasvi Jaiswal broke Virender Sehwag’s record on Saturday (October 26) to become the fastest Indian batter (in terms of balls) to score 1000 Test runs in India.
Star opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal created history on Saturday (October 26) by becoming the fastest Indian batter to score 1000 runs in Tests played at home. The 22-year-old left-handed batter achieved the feat during India’s second inning in the ongoing second Test against New Zealand at MCA Stadium in Pune. He broke former Indian opener Virender Sehwag’s record to take the No. 1 position.
Jaiswal crossed the 1000-run mark in India from 1315 balls, whereas former Sehwag needed 1436 balls to achieve the feat.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma is third on the list with batters to score the fastest 1000 runs in Tests played at India. He crossed the four-digit mark in 1506 balls.
Jaiswal will have to play a big knock for India in the ongoing Test if the hosts want to avoid the embarrassment of losing the first Test series at home since 2012. New Zealand scored 255 runs in the second inning to set a target of 359 runs for India to chase down and win the match. India has managed to chase down the 300+ run target in India only once, and that match was played against England at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai in December 2008.
India has never lost two back-to-back Test matches in front of home fans against New Zealand, and it will be a big task for India to protect that record. If the Kiwis manage to win the ongoing Test in Pune, then it will be the first time in history that they will win a Test series against India in India.
The achievement will become even more special for the Black Caps because they are playing in the ongoing series in the absence of star batter and former captain Kane Williamson. Williamson, who is New Zealand’s all-time leading run scorer in Tests, is dealing with injury-related issues and is yet to arrive in India for the ongoing series.
The Kiwis came to India on the back of losing a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in the island nation last month, but in the ongoing series they have impressed both with their batting and bowling.
