K-drama star Gong Yoo is set to return as the mysterious salesman in the much-awaited Squid Game Season 2. With a few months left before the second season premieres on Netflix, Gong Yoo opened up about his character and what fans can expect in the next part.

In a conversation with Elle Korea, the 45-year-old said that his role started as a “joke,” which he considered a light project. “My appearance began just as a joke when I and Hwang Dong-Hyuk (director) used to meet privately. I was originally supposed to do a special cameo, and the show was actually a light project for me,” he told the fashion magazine, as quoted by Times Now.

Gong Yoo also reflected on how the show grew to become such a big project. “I am just happy to be part of the project that is loved globally. I just don’t want to cause any harm,” he continued.

While the Goblin star didn’t divulge any details about how his character will develop in the second season, he did speak about being nervous over his appearance and mainly the fans’ reactions.

What to expect in Squid Game Season 2?

Following the nightmarish events of the first season with most of the characters suffering gory deaths, Squid Game concluded with a lot of unanswered questions, leading fans to obsess over various theories about the open ending.

After defeating all the players, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung Jae) came out as the lone and alive winner, only to abandon his long-cherished plans to move to the US. Just before he was about to get on the plane, the Front Man returned. Determined to expose the organisation responsible behind the deadly game and to seek revenge, Gi-hun is back in the green suit.

“Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 gave up going to the States and comes back with a new resolution in his mind. Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won,” the show’s synopsis reads.

Squid Game Season 2 will premiere on Netflix on December 26, 2024.
