Surya Grahan 2024 TODAY: Here’s all you need to know about solar eclipses, it’s stages, the 2024 event’s details, zodiac signs’ impact, impact on people performing tarpan and pind daan and how to watch the livestream.

A solar eclipse happens when the moon moves between the sun and Earth, obstructing some or all of the sun’s light from reaching our planet. This phenomenon can only occur during Amavasya (new moon) when the sun and moon align as viewed from Earth.

Today on October 4, 2024, a partial solar eclipse will take place, starting at 9:13 PM IST and lasting until 3:17 AM the following day. The Sutak Kaal will begin at 9:13 AM. Unlike a total solar eclipse where the sun is completely obscured by the moon, a partial solar eclipse occurs when only a portion of the sun is covered.

An annular solar eclipse will be visible in parts of South America, and a partial solar eclipse will be visible in parts of South America, Antarctica, North America, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean, including Hawaii. (Image: News18 Creative)

This eclipse, also known as the ‘ring of fire’, will be visible along a path stretching from the northern United States down through Mexico. Major cities within the path include parts of Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. Here’s all you need to know about Wednesday’s partial solar eclipse.

The second and last solar eclipse of 2024 will occur on the occasion of Pitru Visarjan Amavasya on October 2. In an interview with News18, astrologer Rishikant Mishra Shastri from Unnao, Uttar Pradesh said, “This will be a very long eclipse, with a period of around 6 hours.” As per him, the eclipse will start at 9:13 PM and will continue till 3:17 AM the next day.

WILL THE SOLAR ECLIPSE 2024 BE VISIBLE IN INDIA?

No. Just like the April 8 total solar eclipse, which was visible only in North America, the Indian residents will not be able to witness the October 2 solar eclipse as well.

An annular solar eclipse will be visible in parts of South America, and a partial solar eclipse will be visible in parts of South America, Antarctica, North America, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean, including Hawaii.

5 MAIN STAGES OF A SOLAR ECLIPSE

    1. Penumbral PhaseThe faint outer part of the Moon’s shadow gradually darkens a small area around the Sun. This might be barely noticeable.
    2. Partial PhaseThe Moon starts to cover the Sun’s disc, creating a crescent shape.
    3. TotalityThe Moon completely blocks the Sun, creating a brief period of darkness and allowing you to see the Sun’s corona (outer atmosphere). This is the most dramatic part of the eclipse.
    4. Partial PhaseThe Moon gradually uncovers the Sun, returning to a crescent shape.
    5. Penumbral PhaseThe Earth exits the Moon’s shadow, and the Sun returns to normal.

CAN YOU PERFORM TARPAN AND PIND DAAN FOR ANCESTORS ON THIS DAY?

According to astrology, the eclipse is occurring during the Sutak period, which is considered to be a time of inauspiciousness. The Sutak period starts 12 hours before the solar eclipse and Hinduism prohibits people from doing any religious or auspicious works during then to avoid dosha (curse/misfortune).

However, as per the scriptures, the solar eclipse will not have any effect on India.

Its Sutak period will also not be valid. Any religious and auspicious deeds including tarpan and pind daan, performed by the person on this day will bring auspicious results. However, astrologer Shastri mentioned people, especially pregnant women, to be careful during this period.
