Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany suggested a cap on the number of games an individual player can play amid widespread talks of a players’ strike over fixture congestion.
The common sentiment is that the workload has skyrocketed following the revamp of the UEFA Champions League and the extended 32-team Club World Cup, with some players such as Spain’s Rodri calling for a strike from the players pertaining to the congested calendar.
The former Belgian defender Kompany also suggested a compulsory period of holidays for the players.
“It was already a theme during my playing career,” Kompany began.
“It is a very important topic”, the 38-year-old added.
“To play 75, 80 games, it gets to a point where it’s not realistic anymore,” he said.
“The solution I’ve always wanted is to put a cap on the amount of games a player can play as an individual. Put a cap, put a compulsory period of holidays for players,” the former Manchester City star added.
Kompany, however, also opined that exceptions for finals should be included in the rule as he felt that the chance to play a summit clash shouldn’t be taken away from the players.
“Always include exceptions for finals — we can’t take that away from players”, he added.
He opined that this would take the pressure off the clubs and serve as a mediation point.
“The best of both worlds. It would take away the pressure on the clubs,” he continued,” the Belgian said.
“We are talking about a crowded schedule and stress on the players. Our squad is not a luxury, we need it to achieve our goals,” Kompany clarified.
Manchester City midfielder Rodri had said earlier that the players “are close to a strike” and that “If it keeps going this way, there will be a time when there’s no other option,” the Spaniard added.
Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso opined that he understood the concerns of the players and added that they should be included in the decision that involves them.
“I understand Rodri and the other players,” the Leverkusen boss, who led his team to the Bundesliga title last year said.
“Professional players must be involved in these decisions because we want to see good football,” the Spaniard continued.
“The schedule is very tight. They have to be heard,” the 42-year-old added.
