Imagine cascading waters plunging over a wide, crescent-shaped cliff, creating a magnificent display of nature’s power and beauty. Chitrakoot Falls, with its dramatic drop and impressive width, transforms into a breathtaking spectacle during the rains, drawing visitors from far and wide.
What makes this waterfall truly special? Why does it capture the imagination of all who see it?
- Chitrakoot Falls earns the title of the ‘Niagara Falls of India’ due to its impressive width. As the widest waterfall in the country, it spans up to 300 metres during the monsoon season and cascades about 30 metres in height. Remarkably, the width of the falls varies with the seasons.
- The ideal time to visit Chitrakoot Falls is from June to September during the monsoon season when it is at its most expansive and powerful. The roar of the waterfall can be heard from afar, creating a spectacular experience. In contrast, during the dry season, the falls diminish to a mere stream, losing much of their grandeur.
- It is located on the Indravati River, which originates in the Kalahandi district of Odisha and finally flows into the Godavari River at Bhadrakali after travelling around 390km across the state.
- The increased water flow during the monsoon season makes for a more breathtaking view that attracts several tourists to Chhattisgarh. Located in the Bastar region, the waterfall is surrounded by dense forest, wildlife and tribal culture, taking you a step closer to nature.
- During the season when the water flow is calm — from October to February — visitors can enjoy nature photography, boat trips, hiking and other activities. The region is also loved by the birdwatchers.
- As the area is known for its vibrant tribal culture, here you will find indigenous groups including the Gond, Maria and Muria tribes. Also, you will be able to view local tribal arts and crafts.
- On the left side of the Chitrakoot Falls are a small Hindu shrine devoted to Lord Shiva and several naturally formed grottoes called Parvati caves, named after Goddess Parvati.
- Apart from that, the holy Dhanteshwari Temple, dedicated to Goddess Danteshwari, a revered deity among the tribal communities is also located in the area around the Chitrakoot Falls.
- For those who enjoy nature’s dramatic and awe-inspiring traits, a visit to Chitrakoot Falls during the monsoon could be an amazing experience that encapsulates India’s natural grandeur.
- If you’re planning a trip with your friends or family, Chitrakoot Falls is one location that you can consider.
