Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag reportedly called up some academy players to train with the senior team ahead of Premier League game against Southampton. The Red Devils are set to resume their Premier League campaign at the St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday, September 14. Manchester United team underwent an intense practice session at the Carrington facility on Thursday and five young players, including Harry Amass, Jack Fletcher and Sam Mather, were part of the first team mix, United in Focus reported.
Erik ten Hag may use these youngsters in the upcoming Carabao Cup fixture against Barnsley, scheduled for September 18. Harry Amass, a left-back prodigy, has already featured in two matches for Manchester United U-21 in the Premier League 2. The 17-year-old was impressive in those games and got an assist to his name.
Jack Fletcher has also been in sublime form this season. He has already recorded two goals and an assist for the U-21 team. Thanks to his dominant performance, the young midfielder has also been nominated for the PL2 Player of the Month award.
Meanwhile, Sam Mather was included in the senior team for the pre-season tour. The 20-year-old winger was a key component of the U-18 team that lifted the FA Youth Cup in the 2022 season. Mather has been plying his trade for Manchester United U-21 this season. He has netted two goals in his four appearances across Premier League 2 and the EFL Cup.
Sam Mather was loaned out to Rochdale last season and scored two times for the fifth-tier club. Manchester United handed Mather a new contract this summer after he demonstrated his quality during the pre-season tour. The other two players who joined the senior team at training reportedly were defender Louis Jackson and attacker Ethan Williams.
Manuel Ugarte missed Thursday’s training session as he returned to England late in the evening. The Uruguayan midfielder had been out on national duty. He featured in two World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Venezuela during the international break.
Despite his late arrival in Manchester, Erik ten Hag confirmed that Manuel Ugarte will be available for the Southampton fixture. “Manuel Ugarte, you will have seen he played for Uruguay, and he returned this afternoon, he was the only player who returned today, the rest yesterday, so he is available for this game,” the United boss said at a press meet, as quoted by Manchester United Evening News.
Manchester United will be desperate to secure full three points from the next Premier League game. They have managed one victory in the Premier League so far this season and are currently 14th in the standings.
