Parents need to teach their children the right habits.

Make your children participate in house works by giving them small tasks from a very early age.

Parents often complain that whenever they have guests over at the house, their child behaves in a way that embarrasses them. Generally, it is not the child’s fault. Often parents pay attention to a child’s manners only when guests come to their house. When the child is alone at home, the same behaviour gets overlooked as parents do not stop them nor teach them the right habits. In such a situation, we must teach six basic manners to children to prevent them from throwing tantrums in front of a guest and help them become a better person in the future.

Try to inculcate these habits and children as early as possible –

    – Waiting for everyone to start the meal together

You have to teach your children that they should not start eating until everyone who is sitting at the table has been served the meal. Often children start eating as soon as they get their food. This is when parents should intervene and teach them from an early age that they should wait for everyone and then start eating together.

    – Help in cleaning

Often, parents do not include their children in one of the basic household chores, cleaning. Instead, make your children participate by giving them small tasks from a very early age. You can start off by asking your child to put their plate in the sink after eating, filling up their water bottle and picking up the toys after playing to mention a few.

    – Seek permission before touching other persons belongings

It is very important to teach children to seek permission before they touch the guests’ belongings. Write from an early age, make children get into the habit of asking for permission before they touch someone’s purse, watch or even a cell phone.

    – Interrupting a conversation to draw attention

It’s quite common for a child to interrupt a conversation when two adults are talking, especially if it’s their parents. The young ones interrupt by shouting, pulling hands or creating a scene. It is important to teach children right from a very young age that if they want to draw someone’s attention towards them, then, they should use the phrase, “Excuse me”.

    – Asking parents when in doubt

Children need to realise that when they are in doubt or confused, they can approach their parents. Hence, offer a safe space to your child and always make them feel that they can come to you with any doubts or questions. When children are young, they cannot logically reason everything. Teach them to approach either of the parents before they want to do something.

    – Carrying a handkerchief

Teach children to always keep a handkerchief with them. Whether it is to clean their mouth, blow their nose or dry their hands, they should always keep a kerchief with them.
