Lunar eclipse occurs on the full moon day and solar eclipse on the new moon day.

The second lunar eclipse of this year is set to happen in September and it will be a partial lunar eclipse. It will also mark the final lunar eclipse of the year. According to mythology, an eclipse occurs when Rahu and Ketu attempt to devour the Moon or the Sun. In contrast, science explains that a lunar eclipse happens when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon. Before the eclipse, the Sutak Kaal period begins, during which no auspicious activities are performed. Let’s consult Astrologer Dr Ganesh Mishra from Central Sanskrit University Puri to learn the timing of the lunar eclipse in September, the duration of the Sutak Kaal, and where the eclipse will be visible. According to astrology, lunar eclipse occurs on the full moon day and solar eclipse on the new moon day. The second lunar eclipse of this year will occur on Wednesday, September 18. Bhadrapada Purnima will be on that day. On September 18, the lunar eclipse will start at 6:12 am and the end of the lunar eclipse will be at 10:17 am. The peak of this lunar eclipse will be at 08:14 am. This lunar eclipse will last for 4 hours and 5 minutes.

According to astrological calculations, the Sutak Kaal for a lunar eclipse begins 9 hours before the eclipse. Based on this, the Sutak Kaal for the lunar eclipse on September 18 would typically start on the night of September 17. Since this lunar eclipse will not be visible in India, the Sutak Kaal will not be applicable. This second lunar eclipse of the year will have no impact in India. It will be visible in parts of Europe, Africa, and North and South America. In India, the moon will set at 6:06 AM on September 18, while the eclipse will begin at 6:12 AM. As a result, the moon will have already set by the time the eclipse starts, making it invisible in India.

Pregnant women need to exercise extra caution during a lunar eclipse. They are advised to stay indoors and avoid going outside during the eclipse. They should refrain from eating or sleeping during this period. It is also suggested that pregnant women should not use sharp objects like knives or needles during the eclipse. According to religious beliefs, the eclipse may have negative effects on the unborn child, which is why several precautions are observed during this time.
