Cristiano Ronaldo had a weird but funny response when asked about how he was able to score so many goals in the UEFA Champions League.

Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo feels goals and trophies are like “ketchup” as once they start coming, there is no stopping. He made the remarks at the 2024-25 Champions League draw ceremony in Monaco on August 29.

Ronaldo is the leading scorer in the European club competition, having netted 140 goals in 183 matches. He is 11 goals ahead of Lionel Messi and 46 ahead of Robert Lewandowski, who occupies the third spot in the scoring charts. In recognition of this monumental feat, Ronaldo was conferred with a special award by UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the most decorated players in Champions League history. He has lifted the coveted trophy five times during his illustrious career. He first won the Champions League with Manchester United in 2008 and secured four titles during his time at Real Madrid. He is also the only footballer to score in three Champions League finals.

Ronaldo has recorded the longest scoring streak in the continental showpiece. He had struck the back of the net in 11 consecutive Champions League matches from June 2017 to April 2018. His tally also includes as many as eight hat-tricks. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner opened up about his unmatched Champions League legacy at the recent draw ceremony.

“The first one was always the special one when I was in Manchester. Of course, Real Madrid was differently special, winning four times there. At that time, in Lisbon in 2018, I remember I felt like the most expensive player in the world and there was pressure about winning the Champions League. But I think goals and trophies are like ketchup, once they start coming, they keep coming,” Ronaldo said.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin branded Cristiano Ronaldo as “one of the brightest stars in the Champions League constellation.” “His extraordinary goalscoring achievements in the competition seem destined to stand the test of time, posing a remarkable challenge for future generations to surpass. His sustained excellence at the highest level is a testament to his relentless pursuit of both team and individual honours,” Ceferin added.

Ronaldo has become the top-scorer in seven Champions League seasons. He first time achieved the feat in the 2007-08 campaign with eight goals. He registered an impressive 17-goal haul in the 2013-14 season when Real Madrid claimed the title by defeating Spanish rivals Atletico Madrid.
