Ganpati Utsav 2024: Coconut-Based Idols in High Demand This Year, Can be Reused Even After

The arrival of beloved Ganapati Bappa is eagerly awaited and soon he will be honoured in homes and public mandals. In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on celebrating Ganesh Utsav the eco-friendly way.

Ganesh idols made from coconut shells are particularly in demand this year. These idols, crafted from cocopeat, are known for their simplicity and charm. Idol maker Eknath Rane and his brother Liladhar Rane in Thane create Ganesh idols from coconut in an eco-friendly manner. The Rane brothers also use natural colours to paint these idols.

What is Cocopeat?

Cocopeat is a natural, eco-friendly spongy material made from the fibrous husks of coconuts. It retains water and improves soil aeration and fertility. This makes it suitable for use as fertilizer for trees after immersion of these idols.

“Cocopeat is mixed with shadu soil to create Ganesh idols. Natural colours are used for the idols by mixing turmeric, kumkum, and multani mitti, ensuring there is no adverse effect on tree growth after immersion,” Liladhar Rane said.

Eknath Rane initially began creating cocopeat idols in his home. Now, these idols are in high demand. They are resilient to wet flowers or a little water.

“We dry the idols thoroughly to prevent damage. These idols dissolve in water within three to four hours of immersion, and the remaining soil can be used as fertilizer for trees,” Eknath Rane added.
