Trinamool Congress General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday said his party would hold protests on Delhi streets if the Centre did not introduce anti-rape laws in India.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday said his party would hold protests on Delhi streets if the Centre did not introduce anti-rape laws in India. He also said TMC did not need lessons on women’s safety from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) citing atrocities against women in the saffron party-ruled Manipur.

Speaking at the 27th foundation day of the West Bengal Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, the student wing of his party, Abhishek Banerjee said, “If a time-bound legislation pertaining to the crimes against women is not passed by the Centre in the next 3-4 months, then TMC will hold a big movement in Delhi,” adding, BJP started it, but TMC will end it.

He said his party did not need lessons on women’s safety from the BJP and added, “In Manipur two, Adivasi women were paraded naked. I dare Sukanta and Suvendu (Bengal BJP leaders) if they have the guts, they should demand the resignation of Manipur CM Biren Singh.”

The TMC leader also questioned the progress of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the investigation of the rape-murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in Kolkata’s state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 and said, “14 days have passed. What has the CBI done? CBI has not solved any case from Nobel theft to Sarada, they have done nothing.”

Abhishek Banerjee said, “We oppose the 12-hour ‘Bengal Bandh’ called by BJP.”
