With LeBron nearing 40, the Lakers have set its next target to fill in the NBA legend’s shoes. An NBA insider and The Ringer journalist Kevin O’Connor recently claimed that the Lakers have reportedly set their sights on Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic. “I’ve reported on this podcast and on The Ringer how they have their sights set for Luka [Doncic] in the future,” he said on The Mismatch podcast.

Speaking further, Kevin O’Connor talked about how the Dallas Mavericks just made the NBA finals. Hence, it would not be easy to get the deal done as the side would be desperate to retain him. “We’ll see if that works out. Dallas just made a Finals, Dallas is looking better than ever with their supporting cast. That may not work out,” he said. He even specified how the Los Angeles Lakers were thinking of the future saying, “But the Lakers by not trading their future picks clearly are still thinking long-term at this point. They’re not going all in like you might expect many teams to do with James.”

While LeBron James might not have too many years left in his career, he continues to rule the NBA. He averaged 25.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 8.3 assists this season. Recently he signed a contract renewal with the Lakers in a deal worth $104 million. LeBron’s contract includes a player option that he can choose to trigger in the summer as he is considering taking one season at a time. LeBron would also look to achieve his goal of playing with his son Bronny James in the upcoming campaign.

As for Luka Doncic, he might just be the ideal candidate to replace LeBron James at the Los Angeles Lakers. Doncic emerged as the best scorer of the latest NBA season averaging 33.9 points while also adding 9.2 rebounds and 9.8 assists. At just 25, Doncic has already become a superstar in the NBA. He is in line to receive a mega contract next summer which would likely make him the highest-paid player in the competition.
