Pakistan suffered a shocking defeat by 10 wickets against Bangladesh in the first Test of the ongoing two-match series at home on Sunday (August 25). After conceding a 117-run lead in the first innings, Pakistani players failed to fire in the second innings and could only manage to score 146 runs for the loss of 10 wickets in 55.5 overs. The target of 30 runs in the fourth inning of the match was easily chased down by Bangladesh in 6.4 overs without losing a wicket.
After losing the first ever Test match against Bangladesh in history, Pakistan has now dropped to No. 8 position in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 points table. They have 30.56 PCT%, and their chances of qualifying for the WTC 2025 final next year at the Lord’s are in serious doubt now. On the other hand, Bangladesh has jumped to the joint No. 5 position with 40.00 PCT%.
The Rohit Sharma-led Indian team sits in the No. 1 position in the WTC 2023-25 points table with 68.52 PCT% and is followed by 2023 champions Australia (62.50) and 2021 champions New Zealand (50.00). England, which managed to win the first Test of the ongoing three-match series against Sri Lanka by five wickets on Saturday (August 24), is in 4th place with 41.07 PCT%, followed by Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at joint fifth (40.00 PCT% each).
South Africa is in 7th place with 38.89 PCT% now. The Temba Bavuma-led side had jumped to No. 5 position last week after beating the West Indies by 40 runs in the 2nd Test, but wins for England and Bangladesh this weekend changed the scenario.
4 straight defeats for Shan
Shan Masood, who was appointed as Pakistan’s Test captain last year after Babar Azam stepped down from his role in November 2023, has now lost all of his four Test matches as captain. He made his captaincy debut against Australia last year during the three-match away series and lost all three matches, and on Sunday (August 25), Pakistan hit a new low under his leadership by going down against the Bangladeshi team for the first time in history.
