Sourav Ganguly clarified that one of his earlier statements about the rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata being an ‘one-off incident’ was taken out of context.
India has been rocked by the tragic rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
The body of the woman postgraduate trainee doctor was found inside a seminar hall of the hospital on August 9. A civic volunteer was arrested the next day for his alleged involvement in the crime.
Sourav Ganguly condemned the incident and asked that the culprit should be punished severely.
The former India captain and ex-BCCI president also clarified one of his earlier statements after social media users were left furious when Ganguly had called it an ‘one-off incident’.
“I told that last Sunday, I don’t know how it was construed or was interpreted. I have said it earlier also, it’s a terrible thing. Now CBI, police are investigating the matter. Its very shameful what has happened. I hope that CBI, who are investigating the matter, once they find the culprit strict punishment should be given. The punishment should be such that no one dares to commit such crime again in their life. That is important. Punishment has to be severe,” Sourav Ganguly was quoted as saying by PTI.

Healthcare services remained affected across West Bengal for the tenth consecutive day on Sunday as agitating junior doctors at state-run hospitals continued their cease-work demanding justice.
The junior doctors have been demanding that the culprits be punished as quickly as possible, and the post-mortem examination report of the victim be made public.
The Calcutta High Court on August 13 ordered the transfer of the probe into the case from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) which started its investigation on August 14.
Non-essential healthcare services at the state-run SSKM Hospital, Sambhunath Pandit Hospital, and Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, among others, were crippled because of the agitation. Similar scenes were witnessed at private healthcare facilities in the state. Manipal Hospitals said routine OPD services remained closed.
