London, United Kingdom (UK)

With the Premier League 2024-25 season kicking off tonight, August 16, the first deadline of the season is already looming upon Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players. This means you now have a few hours to tinker with your FPL team. It also leaves you with limited time to get your head around, potentially the biggest, rule changes in the video game’s history. The game was first introduced in the 2002-03 football season and has not seen many major changes. However, this time the game developers decided to alter the ‘free transfers’ rules while adding a mystery chip to make the game more open. Continue reading to learn more about the new transfer rules and understand the differential players you can consider adding to your team.

What are the new FPL rules?

The biggest change in the FPL this season is an increased number of free transfers. Previously, the game only allowed players to bank two free transfers, making the restrictive to those who wanted to change their teams significantly. For instance, selling Erling Haaland to buy Mohammed Salah. Now, the game has allowed the players to bank five transfers at a time. This new change allows you to keep these transfers when playing a chip such as a wild card and a free hit.

What makes this new change a big deal is the opportunity to play several ‘mini wildcards’ throughout the season. It will enable players to add more creativity to the way they use their chips. One can even adopt an aggressive approach in targeting fixture swings to ditch multiple players in one go.

Bonus points have also been tweaked. It will result in defenders being less likely to receive these points while forwards will get a lot more if they win fouls or hit the target. There is a new mystery chip in the game which won’t be revealed until January next year.

FPL differentials to choose from

Marcus Rashford (Manchester United, £7 million)

Despite a poor season last year, Erik ten Hag has spoken about trying to restore the confidence in the player. The English forward could be seen playing down the middle at times.

Daniel Munoz (Crystal Palace, £5 million)

The Colombian enjoyed a superb end last season with Crystal Palace winning 47 FPL points in his last 11 games. These sensational numbers make him a top pick.

Emile Smith Rowe (Fulham, £5.5 million)

The ex-Arsenal man scored 10 times in 21 starts in the 2021-22 season. He suffered a few physical setbacks in the following campaign. However, his potential also makes him an ideal pick for most FPL players.

Chris Wood (Nottingham Forest, £6 million)

Averaging 5.7 points per game last season, Chris Wood will also be suitable as a differential in the 2024-25 FPL season

Niclas Fullkrug (West Ham, £7 million)

Having seen what Niclas Fullkrug did in Germany, Niclas Fullkrug might hit the ground running right from the season’s beginning. He will be superb pick given his prowess in the air.
