A day after the heartbreaking announcement that Vinesh Phogat’s appeal to be at least awarded a silver medal was dismissed, the Indian wrestling star shared a cryptic post on social media, making it her first public reaction since the heartbreaking call by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Phogat’s post has a picture of her on the floor seemingly emotional after the fight, indicating that the result is still one that haunts her, despite the conclusion of the Paris Olympics 2024.
Yesterday, the CAS officially dismissed Phogat’s appeal to receive a silver medal after the Indian wrestling star had missed weight on the day of the Women’s 50kg freestyle event final where she was supposed to face USA’s Sarah Ann Hildebrandt.
She was cleared to compete on the first day of her event where she mauled her way through the semi-finals, beating the likes of Yui Susaki from Japan who was the defending World Champion and had an undefeated record at the time.

But despite resorting to dangerous measures like cutting her hair, drawing blood and extreme levels of dehydration to ensure she does not go above the designated weight, she was found to be over the limit by just 100 grams.
A day after her heartbreaking disqualification, Vinesh announced her retirement from the sport, saying she doesn’t have the strength to continue, as sporting icons from across the world threw their weight behind the 29-year-old wrestler appearing in her third Olympic Games.
Despite bringing in the best lawyers and all the support from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), the efforts proved futile as her dreams of bringing home an Olympic medal were impossible.
Many including the President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) have requested Phogat to reconsider her decision to hang up her boots, but she remains silent regarding the decision, indicating that she might be gone for good.
The moment will certainly be one that will be marred in Indian sporting history, with debates continuing on whether it is the United World Wrestling’s fault for their inhumane rules or whether it is the incompetence of the team behind her missing weight on the eve of her gold-medal match.
