Katarina Johnson-Thompson’s stunning comeback helped her win silver in the heptathlon at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Great Britain’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson completed a sensational comeback to win her first Olympic medal in the 2024 Paris Games. The 31-year-old British athlete won silver in the Olympic heptathlon on Friday. She fell shy of Belgium’s now-three-time gold winner Nafissatou Thiam. Katarina’s impressive victory saw the athlete overcome her ghosts of the previous edition of the Olympics where she had to withdraw due to fitness issues. ESPN UK and ESPN W have now shared a collage of Katarina’s photographs from both events on Instagram. “Katarina Johnson-Thompson has claimed her first ever Olympic medal with a silver in the heptathlon, after being forced to withdraw due to an injury at the Tokyo 2020 games,” read the post.
Fans have now flocked to the comments section to congratulate Katarina Johnson-Thompson on securing her first Olympic medal. One of them wrote, “Never give up kids, a good lesson to learn here.”
Another said, “Well done KJT! So proud of you. You gave it everything. PBs in some events, can’t ask for more than that.”
One netizen added, “Ultimate redemption and all down to her hard work and dedication!”
“She doesn’t age,” wrote one more.
Katarina Johnson-Thompson suffered a heartbreak in the previous edition of the Olympic Games in Tokyo. The British world champion had to withdraw from the Olympic heptathlon in 2021 due to a calf injury.
Katarina previously suffered an Achilles problem in 2020 which saw her barely compete in the following year. She was heavily strapped on her right calf during the race in Japan. After going down, the Liverpudlian had covered her face with palms while writhing in pain.
Despite pulling up, Katarina Johnson-Thompson got back to her feet to finish the race, refusing to be taken off the track in a wheelchair. She hobbled and jogged over the finish line but was eventually disqualified for leaving her lane.
After the nightmare end to the event, BBC trackside reporter Jeanette Kwakye revealed the British athlete didn’t want to speak to the media as he left the track. “I think we all thought it was amazing to see her run in the hurdles but there was limping after the high jump and there was always going to be a lot of stress on the Achilles,” she said.
Katarina Johnson-Thompson didn’t let the setback at the Tokyo Games hinder her from making history at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She overcame a 121-point gap over Nafissatou Thiam as he headed into the final event, 800m. By the end, Katarina recorded a personal best time of 2 minutes and 4.9 seconds but missed a gold as Thiam finished only just under six seconds behind her.
