Suryakumar Yadav made his Test debut for India against Australia in Nagpur on February 7, 2023, but was only able to score eight runs in one inning.
India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, made his Test debut against Australia in Nagpur on February 7, 2023. He was included in the playing XI for the first Test of the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, but the star batter failed to do much and got out for eight runs in the first inning.
He was replaced by Shreyas Iyer in the playing XI for the second Test in Delhi, and after the India-Australia series, he was never picked again for the red-ball squad.
But the 33-year-old star batter, who played a big role in helping India win the T20 World Cup 2024 title, has now expressed his desire to play in all three formats of the game for India and is looking to make a comeback in the Test team by doing well in domestic cricket.
“I want to play for India in all three formats,” Suryakumar was quoted as saying by the Times of India.
Ahead of the start of the upcoming red-ball season, Surya will play for Mumbai in the Buchi Babu invitational cricket tournament. The star cricketer wasn’t initially included in the Sarafraz Khan-led team but was later added to the squad after he informed Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) selection committee chief Sanjay Patil about his availability and desire to play in the tournament.
“I will be playing the Buchi Babu tournament. It will give me a good practice session before the domestic season starts. I will join the team after the 25th. I’m always available to play for Mumbai and the club team whenever free,” Surya told Indian Express.
Surya’s comments came a couple of weeks after India’s chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, said that the board is only considering him for the shortest format of the game at present, which is why he was not picked in India’s squad for the recently concluded three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka.
Surya, who has played in one Test, 37 ODIs, and 71 T20Is for India since making his debut in March 2021 against England, last featured in an ODI match on November 19, 2023, against Australia in Ahmedabad. He was slammed for his poor show with the bat in the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, which India lost by six wickets.
