A disappointing chapter added to the history of Indian sports on Wednesday, leaving the entire country shell-shocked. Hours after becoming the first woman wrestler to compete in an Olympic final, Vinesh Phogat found herself out of the gold medal match with all her previous victories standing null and void. The reason being her body weight.
Vinesh, who was set to compete in the 50kg Freestyle final, was found to be overweight by 100 grams and the set of strict rules denied her participation in the gold medal match. After a massive uproar, in Paris and India, the ace grappler finally decided to draw curtains to her career.

- Vinesh, following her disqualification from the gold medal match, will have to return empty-handed. Which means she won’t even get a silver medal.
- She had to be taken to a polyclinic in the GAMES village as she reportedly fainted due to dehydration.
- Chief Medical Officer of the Indian contingent, Dinshaw Pardiwala revealed that the wrestler exceeded the weight limit by 2.7 kg following her semi-final bout.
- Pardiwala further revealed the efforts made to bring Vinesh’s weight within the limits. They tried chopping off her hair, shortening her singlet, food & water intake restrictions, dripping out blood from her body, etc.
- Former athlete and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President, PT Usha expressed disappointment over the wrestler’s disqualification. While confirming that Vinesh Phogat is physically and medically fine, she pointed out that the player is disappointed.
- PM Modi came up with a social media post to console Vinesh on her disqualification and directed IOA President PT Usha to take necessary action.
- ‘It’s part of the game,’ a brave Vinesh Phogat told the Indian coaches who met her after her shock disqualification from the Paris Olympics.
- According to media reports, Vinesh has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) over the issue.
- ‘Goodbye Wrestling’: Vinesh finally decided to part ways with the sport and retire. Her farewell marked the end of an illustrious career spanning from 2001 to 2024. Vinesh also expressed her gratitude, saying she’ll forever be indebted to her supporters. “Alvida, Kushti,” she concluded, ending an era in Indian wrestling.
- Her opponent in the semis – Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez – advanced to finals replacing Vinesh and won the silver. USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt grabbed the gold.
