Vinesh Phogat has created history in Paris by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to enter the final of an Olympic Games after she brushed aside Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semifinal clash of 50kg event on Tuesday.

With this win in the semifinal, Vinesh guaranteed herself at least a silver medal.

Both wrestlers got off to a cautious start but a passivity clock on Lopez meant that Vinesh got on the board with one technical point after the Cuban didn’t take a risk.

Vinesh was leading 1-0 at the end of the first period.

She extended her dominance in the second period with four more points to seal the bout in her favour.

Vinesh’s uncle and celebrated coach Mahavir Phogat celebrated her win watching the bout from their village Balai in Charkhi Dadri (Harayana).

Earlier, Vinesh entered the semifinals on the back of two incredible wins, against reigning Olympic champion Yui Susaki of Japan and Ukraine’s eighth seed Oksana Livach on a memorable day for the combative Indian grappler.

“The Japanese girl was a very good fighter who had never lost to anyone on the mat and as I said the one winning this match would be a contender for the gold medal and that is something Vinesh has done with her grit and spirit,” Dronacharya Awardee Mahavir told PTI Video.

Mahavir had said how he advised Vinesh on the strategy against the Japanese supertsar.

“Vinesh defended and attacked well and also balanced herself well against her leg strategy and dragged her into the danger zone and pinned her down. I told Harvinder who is with her to watch out for the Japanese opponent’s leg attack strategy so you have to defend well in the first round and that is what she did, so I am glad she won and the whole nation is proud of her,” Mahavir told PTI.
