Vishnu Saravanan, Nethra Kumanan fail for qualify sailing dinghy finals
While Vishnu had an overall 18th-place finish with 114 net points, Nethra finished 21st. Both of India’s sailors are now out of the competition.
Indian sailors Nethra Kumanan & Vishnu Saravanan crashed out of the ongoing Olympic Games 2024 on Monday. Both of them bore the brunt of inclement weather, resulting in the cancellation of their respective races. Their campaigns ended as only the Top 10 sailors qualified for the finale.
Kumanan finished at the 21st spot after the ninth qualifying race in the individual Dinghy event at Paris Olympics here on Monday. There are 10 races in qualifying rounds after which the medal round list is decided but the 10th race was cancelled due to inclement weather.
After the eighth qualifying race, she was placed 24th and on Monday, she improved upon her previous few days of shoddy show to finish a creditable 10th among 43 in the ninth qualifying race. But that could only help her in jumping three spots to 21st and that was never going to be enough in the end.
Her best performance was in the first qualifying race in which she finished sixth and worst was the eighth race where she was a dismal 31st. After the first qualifiers, she hardly was in contention for the top 10 places.
For the 26-year-old Nethra, this is the second successive time that she has failed to progress to the Medal Race.
On the other hand, Saravanan was placed 18th after race 8 in the men’s dinghy sailing opening series with 114 points, bettering his 20th position finish in Tokyo. The 25-year-old Indian was ranked 7th and 24th in races 7 and 8 respectively.
Earlier this year, Saravanan won the gold medal in the men’s one-person dinghy (ILCA7) category at the Europa Cup 2024 sailing meet in Mallorca, Spain. He finished first in two of his seven races at the meet.
Kumanan had qualified for the Olympic Games after finishing fifth on Day 5 of the Last Chance Regatta in the ILCA 6 Category with 69 points. She finished fifth on the leaderboard. She won the ENP (Emerging Nation Program Quota) which will be given to the best ENP sailor after the top 3.
