The Indian men’s table tennis team crashed out of the Paris Olympics 2024 on Tuesday. Unlike the women’s trio, the men suffered a crushing 3-0 defeat against the Chinese team, comprising Chuqin Wang, Long Ma and Zhendong Fan.
India began with a 0-3 loss in the doubles face-off with the pair Ma Long, and Wang Chuqin beating the duo of Harmeet Desai-Manav Thakkar 11-2, 11-3, 11-7 and taking a 0-1 lead.

In the next game, ace paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal squared off Fan Zhendong but couldn’t make any difference. Though the experienced campaigner toiled hard to win the first game 11-9, the Olympic gold medallist from China made a dominant comeback to draw level with an 11-7 win in the second game.
Kamal had a chance to redeem himself and allow India to level up but Zhendong aced the third game 11-7, handing China a 2-0 lead.
Hopes were pinned on Manav Thakkar who faced Wang Chuqin in match no. 3 of the team event. But like his teammates, Thakkar too suffered the same fate. Chuqin showcased a remarkable performance in thumping his Indian opponent 11-9, 11-6, and 11-9 and taking China into the next round.
The Indian women’s team will hope that they have better fortunes in their quarterfinal clash. They had beaten Romania 3-2 in what was a closely fought contest yesterday in the Round of 16 match.
The pair of Sreeja Akula and Archana Girish Kamath set the tone with a 3-0 victory followed by Manika Batra who also claimed a straight-set win to put the Indian team in a dominant position.

However, in the third match, Sreeja Akula suffered a 2-3 defeat in the singles contest against Elizabeta Samara to give the Romanian side a chance. Bernadette Szocs won the third singles contest against Archana 3-1 as well.
But Manika Batra came into the decider with a dominant 3-0 win over Adina Diaconu to seal the win for the Indian team. Their opponent for the quarterfinal is yet to be confirmed.
