The ‘Get S— Done’ Pennsylvania governor who could be Kamala Harris’ running mate

An observant conservative Jew with four children, Mr Shapiro’s supporters say he has an ability to work with politicians across the aisle to achieve those results. Very importantly, he has positioned himself as a moderate on energy issues in a state that is America’s second largest producer of natural gas.

A fuss-free executive and family man, he often stresses the need for bipartisanship in the politically divided state government.

The first run out for the GSD slogan was last year when officials were able to reopen a section of highway in Philadelphia that had collapsed just 12 days earlier after an accident.

Many observers believe Ms Harris, who is seeking to become America’s first female president, as well as the first Indian-American commander-in-chief, will feel compelled to balance the ticket with a white male.

In addition to ticking that box, Mr Shapiro is the governor of one of the most important battleground states. Democrats see their path to victory through the upper mid midwest region states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. All were states won by Donald Trump in 2016, but then regained by Joe Biden in 2020.

There is talk Ms Harris might be able to expand the map to secure the 270 electoral college votes required by winning in Georgia and North Carolina.

But places such as Pennsylvania will be a crucial part of the Democrats’ “Blue Wall” and Mr Shapiro’s 56-42 win over Republican Doug Mastriano pointed to his considerable support. (Many voters were also turned off by Mr Mastriano’s false claims of election rigging.)
