Paris Olympics 2024, Gymnastics: Simone Biles Loses Floor Gold Medal to Brazil’s Rebeca

Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade won the gold medal in the women’s gymnastics floor exercise at the Paris Olympics on Monday, edging out American Simone Biles, who won silver. Jordan Chiles, also of the United States, took the bronze.

Brazil’s Andrade became the first gymnast to beat Biles in a floor final in a major international competition, posting a score of 14.166 that finished just ahead of Biles at 14.133.

Widely considered the greatest gymnast in history, Biles was bidding to add to her Paris haul of three golds in balance beam and floor finals at the Bercy Arena.

She had already led the United States to team gold and regained the all-around crown she first won as part of a four-gold haul in Rio in 2016.

She soared to the vault title with a stellar rendition of her signature Yurchenko double pike vault to take her career tally of Olympic gold to seven.

But she couldn’t find her way back to the top of the podium on Monday, two out-of-bounds errors proving too costly in an otherwise breathtaking final floor routine.

Andrade had already moved into first place with an energetic and elegant routine that garnered 14.166 points.

Biles earned 14.133 for silver ahead of teammate Jordan Chiles, who took bronze with 13.766. Chiles’s score was upgraded after a review of her degree of difficulty, a devastating blow for Romania’s Ana Barbosu who thought she had earned bronze with her score of 13.700.

Biles’s legion of fans gave her a standing ovation anyway, and Biles departed the floor mat with both arms raised in acknowledgement.

But she slipped off the beam while walking backwards in her routine, the unusual error gifting gold to Italy’s Alice D’Amato.

A clearly furious Biles exited the arena to prepare for her floor exercise final, which also ended in heartbreak as two landing errors sent her into silver behind Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade.

She famously fell victim to the debilitating mental block gymnasts call the “twisties” at the Tokyo Olympics but has bounced back emphatically to silence critics who slammed her as a quitter.

Biles ended her campaign in Paris with three golds and a silver, bringing her total Olympic haul to 11, seven of which are gold.
