The India-born cricketer is currently in the ICU of a private hospital in Gurugram awaiting a liver transplant.

Ireland cricketer Simi Singh is awaiting a liver transplant in a private hospital in Haryana’s Gurugram. The 37-year-old allrounder has acute live failure and is currently in the ICU of the private facility having arrived from Ireland in June this year. As per a report in The Times of India, around six months back Simi developed a ‘strange fever’ while in Ireland but the medical professionals in Dublin couldn’t determine the underlying cause and therefore refused to start medication.

With his condition deteriorating, his family decided to fly to India to get him treated.  “The process was getting delayed and Simi’s health was deteriorating, so we decided to get him treated in India for ‘better medical attention’,” Simi’s father-in-law Parvinder Singh told the publication.

Born in Mohali (Punjab), Simi played age-group cricket in India and when his career stalled, he decided to pursue Hotel Management in Ireland. However, the sport continued to be a part of his life and he eventually started playing club cricket in the country.

He then went on to represent Ireland at international level and has thus far played 35 ODIs and 53 T20Is since making his debut in 2017. The off-spinning allrounder has an ODI century against South Africa and a five-wicket haul against UAE.

Having admitted to PGI in Chandigarh, Simi was first treated for Tuberculosis but the medication didn’t have any effect. Simi was then shifted to a private facility where it was concluded he doesn’t have TB. However, the medical staff said the cricketer will have to complete the course of treatment but his fever kept rising and then he developed acute jaundice.

Simi was again moved back to PGI where they were informed he has acute live failure and advised to get him treated in Gurugram where he’s now awaiting a liver transplant.

Simi’s wife Agamdeep Kaur has reportedly agreed to donate a part of her liver

“Thankfully, Simi’s blood group is AB+ which means he is a universal receiver. The doctors say that matching with his wife won’t be a problem. The transplant is likely to be performed very soon, and the doctors are positive that the outcome will be in Simi’s favour and will give him a new lease of life,” TOI quoted a close family member as saying.
